UK firms respectable fifth in bribery table

British companies are more squeaky clean than their French, Australian or American competitors when it comes to bribing foreign officials, anti-corruption body Transparency International (TI) said today.

Interviews of more than 2500 executives gave the UK a score of 8.6 in the Bribe Payers Index, where 10 represented a clean score, ranking it fifth alongside Germany and Japan. Britain was in sixth place in 2006, when the last survey was carried out.

"UK companies are responding to an international regulatory environment that is becoming tougher on foreign bribery," said TI chairman John Drysdale. "But the swift enactment of a new, up-to-date and easily understood anti-corruption law is vital."

Another TI survey published today that looked at corruption of workers around the world found builders are the most likely to bribe public officials.
