UK hotels slash price of rooms

Hotels in the UK have slashed their prices by an average of 16% as the struggling tourism industry tries to drum up business.

Britons paid an average of £83 for a room in the first six months of the year, compared with £99 a year earlier, according to Hotels.com's index.

Travellers from the US and Europe got even cheaper deals because of the weak pound, with Americans paying 28% less and euro users 22% less.

However, London's hoteliers have been less afflicted thanks to currency-conscious shoppers coming to shop.

But prices have still fallen 12% on average in the capital as the supply of accommodation shoots up ahead of the Olympics.

The number of rooms has risen by 6% in the last year and a half.
