Unite squares up to Fujitsu over changes to its pension

The Unite union is bracing itself for a fight with giant Japanese IT group Fujitsu.

Unite, the largest UK union, reckons that plans by Fujitsu to alter its final-salary staff pension scheme will in effect lead to a pay cut of at least 15% for 4000 employees.

It is asking 2000 of its members who work for the company if they want to take industrial action.

Unite points out that Fujitsu Services is making significant profits — £199 million in the past year on a 12% rise in sales to £2.8 billion.

It also paid out £1.59 million in compensation for loss of office to two directors. Peter Skyte, Unite national officer for IT and communications, said: "Fujitsu Services is a highly profitable and successful company which is seeking to take advantage of the recession to attack pay, pensions and conditions.

"We are insisting that the company should increase pay and provide decent pensions for all its employees.

"Our position is to protect the defined benefit pension scheme," he added.

"Any changes which reduce financial risk to the company at the expense of members should be compensated for accordingly."

Fujitsu employs around 12,000 people in the UK.
