Vodafone faces £1.6bn bill as it loses India case

Vodafone today lost a case in the Indian High Court which could cost it 120 billion rupees (£1.66billion) in back taxes on its $11.1 billion (£7.2 billion) purchase of Essar one of India's biggest mobile phone firms in 2007.
Chancellor George Osborne had lobbied against the tax bill when he visited India with Prime Minister David Cameron in July.
Vodafone is almost certain to appeal the case to the Indian Supreme Court and today's ruling said the tax authorities could not make a final demand for the tax for the next eight weeks.
