Yang has been under pressure for months for driving away Microsoft's $47 billion (£23.95 billion) takeover offer. However, early results from last Friday's shareholder vote showed 85% of votes going to him.

Forced to a recount by one of its biggest shareholders, Yahoo has now revised the tally to show 33.7% of votes withheld for Yang — more than twice the opposition to his reappointment to the board as in the first count.

Capital Research Global Investors, one of the Yahoo's biggest shareholders and a critic of Yang, called for a probe of the vote after finding discrepancies in the results.

Yahoo said Corporate Election Services, the company's inspector of elections, found Broadridge Financial Solutions, a proxy voting intermediary for major investors, made significant errors in reporting votes.
