Wolfson's homesick chief exec quits after two years

The American chief executive of Wolfson Microelectronics has quit the business after less than two years in the job because he is homesick for California.

Dave Shrigley, 60, and his wife moved over to chilly Edinburgh from the sunny West Coast of the US when he was appointed chief executive-designate in November 2006.

Today he announced he was quitting, with sources saying he was missing friends and family back home. He is thought to have grown-up children back in the US.

Shrigley was credited with having successfully moved Wolfson into mobile phone applications - a move which added more diversification to a company that previously had been seen as over-reliant on the market for portable music players.

Most famously, Wolfson's chips are now in Apple's iPhone devices. Shrigley was on a salary of $467,000 (£264,000) a year. The company declined to comment on whether he would be getting a pay-off.

He will be replaced by an Englishman, Mike Hickey.

He is a 49-year-old Motorola executive who has held various senior positions in the US giant's mobile devices business.

Michael Ruettgers, chairman of Wolfson, said Shrigley had been involved in the process of recruiting Hickey.
