Clubbing

Gruff Rhys
Techno-tastic: Gruff Rhys of the Super-Furry Animals, who are hanging up their guitars to DJ at Cargo

Critic's choice: top five clubs

Chris Elwell-Sutton
25 May 2007

A taste of Japanese club culture, Super Furry Animals on the decks and Eddy Temple-Morris' dancefloor-filling, bleepy studio boffins. Chris Elwell-Sutton picks this weekend's best club nights.

Futureworld City: Tokyo
ICA, SW1
Nick Luscombe hosts an event that goes way beyond the tacky theme-night to provide a genuine taste of Japanese club culture. Koichi Sakai from Tokyo is on the turntables, and there's a live set from Mico. Arty add-ons include a projection installation by photographer Yuka Fujii, a "mini night market" and an element which I, for one, hope will become a regular clubland fixture: a dog fashion show.

Trojan Sessions
Cargo, EC2
The trend for bands to perform DJ sets has more to do with the cult of the celebrity than any DJ-ing skill they might automatically possess by virtue of being musicians. The Super Furry Animals, however, are more than mere dabblers, having started their careers on the techno scene, and are celebrating the release their mix album, out on Trojan Records. Talking of which, the Trojan Soundsystem are set to rock the party tonight with an infectious, accessible blend of reggae, bashment and hip-hop and a similar crowd-pleasing feat will doubtless be performed by superb breaks/hip-hop collective, Bugz In The Attic.

Chalk
The Scala, N1
For the moment, this is the end of Chalk, a hugely popular and brilliantly programmed party that has set a new standard in the rapidly expanding field of the dance/rock, DJs/live acts-based club night. Live entertainment comes from Datarock, Shychild, grime overlord Wiley and hotly-tipped Londoners Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, whose soulful garage rock sound is as jovial as their name would suggest. DJ talent includes Do It?, Prancehall and Audiojackers.
(020 7833 2022). Sat 26 May, 10.30pm-4am.

The Remix All-Nighter
SEOne Club, SE1
Eddy Temple-Morris takes the helm for a night dominated by dancefloor-filling, bleepy studio boffins. Death In Vegas take to the turntables along with mashup king Freelance Hellraiser. Hot underground music-makers playing include Sub Focus, Chase & Status, Noisia and Ctrl Z and the techno-flavoured sound of Freshold.
(020 7407 1617). Sat 26 May, 9.30pm-6am.

UMAMi
The Egg, N7
The official launch party for the 10th incarnation of the electronic music and arts festival Antiworld (for more info, see www.antiworld070707.com), this Bank Holiday extravaganza boasts a juicy, techno-heavy line-up. Ben Sims, Chris Liberator and Surgeon take over the main room, with Billy Nasty and Radioactive among the DJs in the second room. There's also a set from deep, minimal house types, Audiofly and internet radio supremo, Paddy Freeform.
(020 7267 8320). Sun 27 May, 9pm-6am.
