It's Tweedledum and Tweedledee

Phill Jupitus & Andre Vincent share an uncanny resemblance

Mickey Noonan, Metro 17 Aug 2007

For those who haven't noticed, Phill Jupitus and Andre Vincent share an uncanny resemblance. They're also somewhat similar to Lewis Carroll's absurd twins Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Cue Waiting For Alice, the pair's take on Beckett's existential classic.

Dum and Dee have been waiting nigh on 70 years for the girl in the blue dress to come back. It's their life's purpose to quote their lines and fight with coal scuttles and wooden swords in order to help Alice on her way. Awestruck Dum wants to rehearse. Dee, however, is bored and restless, sure that she isn't coming back. Squabbling like an old married couple, the twins are trapped by an even greater fear of the unknown.

At first the play is slow and predictable. But the pace quickens and there are some big questions raised amid the humorous sniping and childish bottom jokes.

Both comics hold their own in this Godot-like fantasy, which questions our faith in what is real and what we feel comfortable believing.

Until Aug 26 (not Mon), Assembly@George Street, 6.15pm, £13 to £15.
