Philosophy of a funster

Easy transition: Mark Watson took his West End debut in his stride

Easy transition: Mark Watson took his West End debut in his stride

Look here too

If anyone can turn a one-hour Edinburgh set into a two-hour West End spectacular, it is Mark Watson. After all, 120 minutes is nothing for this record-breaking raconteur who has performed non-stop for 36 hours. While others might be daunted by their extended theatrical debut, this skinny streak of energy takes it in his stride.

Can I Talk To You Briefly About The Point Of Life? is not as deep as the title suggests. The philosophical theme is really just a comedic washing line on which Watson hangs glorious gripes. Utterly Butterly, panel shows and noise-polluting iPods are just three of the disparate subjects brilliantly brought down a few pegs.

Behind the rapid-fire digressions there is clearly a smart mind.

While Watson plays the bumbler in baggy flares, his Oxbridge learning occasionally pokes through. If he was really such a clot, that does not explain a Latin ad lib of "festina lente" that only about three fans realised meant "hurry slowly".

The intermittent sense that one is watching a subtle comedy character rather than a real person, however, cannot stop this from being great fun. Besides, how can you not enjoy someone who claims to be smashing the system from within by drinking Red Bull after Red Bull refused to sponsor him?

Until 15 September. Information: 0870 890 1101, www.nimaxtheatres.com.
