Scattershot satirist: Rich Hall has so many brilliant ideas bouncing around his head he has difficulty getting them out in the right order

There was a great Rich Hall gig at the Soho Theatre last night, buried beneath plenty of nonsense. Hall is a frustratingly scattershot satirist who has so many brilliant ideas bouncing around his head he has difficulty getting them out in the right order. "Spinning plates," he calls it. This time a couple crashed to the floor.

Some critics have pigeonholed Hall as an off-the-peg grumpy old man, but that does the Montana-based ubiquitous visitor an injustice. He might like a Meldrewish moan about the failings of late-night telly and people who say "Have a nice day" but there is lots more going on behind that crackly monotone.

Despite having difficulties finding his rhythm his dissent still hit numerous bullseyes. He skewered Al Gore's Oscar victory for "Best Powerpoint Presentation" and could hardly contain himself at the thought of George Bush's plan to open a giant library: "How many Garfield books can there possibly be?"

Following a sublime anecdote about meeting the Queen, an explanation for his distractedness emerged. After seven years Hall is tired of Bush-bashing. Roll on the election and fresh inspiration.

Although as he confessed, even a female Democrat in the White House might not change much: "It's like hanging an 'under new management' sign over a porn theatre."
