Yearning for his childhood

By Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard  13.11.07

Sean Hughes

Lots to enjoy: Sean Hughes

Look here too

When Sean Hughes is good he's very, very good and when he's bad he's still all right. Touring again after a lengthy sabbatical, he frequently tickled the funny bone last night, even though the buttoned-up Monday crowd nearly sucked the life out of the evening.

Despite droopy moments there was lots to enjoy. After Mark Watson and Frank Skinner, Hughes is another angsty act. The 42-year-old complains about being directed to the jazz section in record stores and frets about adventurous sex: "At my age my back could go at any minute."

Topics sway from the 2004 Tsunami to recreational drugs to the hangdog humorist's fractious relationship with his parents. But most of all this is about Hughes, the solipsistic singleton yearning for his crispy pancake-filled childhood while at he same time hinting at a darker Catholic upbringing.

Contradiction is the key to Hughes, who, with his infectious delivery and intermittent contempt for humanity, is both endearing and misanthropic. But there are simple, formidable gags too. His image of drunkenly watching a subtitled film and thinking he was in a karaoke bar will linger for a long time.
