King of the Christmas cardboard

Ennio Marchetto
Lewd: Ennio Marchetto's Mona Lisa

By Bruce Dessau
21 Dec 2007

There are more star cameos in an Ennio Marchetto show than in an Extras Christmas special. Admittedly they are all made of cardboard and some of them look like they have seen better days, yet this unique mime artiste, who specialises in lightning-fast costume changes, continues to delight even when the initial novelty has worn off.

This year's show tosses a few new topical gags into the mix to freshen things. Amy Winehouse emerges from a bottle of Chablis and proceeds to devour the contents of an off-licence.

Not a particularly original observation but beautifully executed, with Marchetto teetering around the stage before transforming himself into the only celebrity with even higher hair, Marge Simpson.

The versatile Italian also got a big laugh with his trusty succession of divas, ranging from wobbly-bosomed Dolly Parton to a thunder-thighed Tina Turner.

Along the way Streisand, Cher and Madonna (and child) put in brief appearances while Gloria Gaynor's disco ball dress almost caused mass hysteria among Marchetto's loyal camp followers.

Some other moments felt a little past their prime. Does anyone really remember the Singing Nun or care about Doris Day? And with George Michael, Marchetto definitely missed a trick, opting for cheap innuendo. Likewise his flirtatious Mona Lisa was on the lewd side for a family-friendly show.

But these are minor gripes. Marchetto is in a league of his own, a one-off who is big on the feelgood factor even if low on addressing the human condition. Long may he keep visiting. Though maybe he could leave Doris at home next time.

Until 30 December (0871 663 2500, www.southbankcentre.co.uk).

Bruce, you certainly got it wrong when you said that no one cares about Doris Day! Miss Day has millions of fans across the world including London England I can assure you.

Doris Day is a multi-talented woman who delights people of all ages with her charming personality, incredible acting and comedic skills, humanitarian projects and to die for voice. In addition she will be awarded a Grammy award in February 2008 for her life time achievements in music
