Miles Jupp
Amusingly irritable: Miles Jupp suffers from 'flash tantrums'

By Bruce Dessau
30 Apr 2008

Comedians from Les Dawson to Jack Dee have got extensive mileage out of exploring life’s irritants.

Most have opted for grumpy personae, which makes the affable Miles Jupp stand out. His current show, Everyday Rage and Dinner Party Chat, is a refreshingly cheery roll-call of annoyances, more Hugh Grant than Victor Meldrew.

Jupp suffers from “flash tantrums”. When the red mist descends, stand back.

A typical incident was at an easyJet check-in. Having missed his flight this normally mild-mannered toff unleashed a veritable fusillade of abuse and stormed off before having to return meekly to the same check-in for the next flight.

This is an effective monologue partly because we’ve all been there, but also because Jupp has a skilful way of stretching vignettes to the limit.

Whether Jupp is recounting a confrontation with chanting QPR hooligans or recalling a childhood trouser-soiling incident in Swiss Cottage, he paints a vivid picture with almost forensic detail.

Apart from a few overlong digressions, the further he pushes it, the funnier he becomes. The highlight is a deliciously daft Pizza Hut plate-dropping calamity where Jupp likens the carnage to a salad-based version of the opening of Saving Private Ryan.

For the sake of comedy, keep this man away from anger management classes.

Until 3 May (020 7704 2001, www.ticketweb.co.uk).
