Corpsing did him no harm at all

Tim Minchin
Stupidly clever: Tim Minchin, grand master of musical comedy

By Bruce Dessau
20 May 2008

And so phase one of Tim Minchin’s World Domination Plan draws to a close. With two performances of his greatest hits being filmed for DVD posterity before a new show debuts in Edinburgh, the Australian with the craziest hair this side of Russell Brand’s bird’s nest pulled out all the stops. The sell-out crowd loved it, thirstily downing his cocktail of stupidly clever and cleverly stupid musical comedy.

I’m still not entirely convinced though, being one of those critics who gets up his nose by wishing that this accomplished singer/songwriter was not quite so rude. While it is impressive that Minchin can come up with a hugely infectious satirical ditty about suicide bombers, A Ten Foot Cock And A Few Hundred Virgins, does it have to be so vulgar?

There were umpteen lines that are completely unquotable in a family newspaper. The barefoot pianist has a penchant for bad taste, pushing it to the brink with songs about inflatable women and gags about Iraq, Palestine and Gary Glitter within a couple of verses.

I cannot even start to list the things he wants his wife to do to prove her love. He was on safer ground with his brilliantly overblown, open-shirted eco-anthem about using canvas bags when one goes shopping.

Despite an abundance of talent on display, last night’s set was a little too mannered.

Maybe he needs to loosen up, as he did briefly during a poem in which he had to fake Tourette’s Syndrome and ended up corpsing. This showed a human side to Minchin which is often hidden by his polished creativity. It will probably be edited out of the DVD but was a highlight of a night that was too slick and too sick for this sourpuss.

I was at the gig, and dot remember Tim corpsing at all during the poem. People were laughing through out. Unusual review. Also, if you cant take vulgarity, stop reviewing.
