Bearded wonder in a league of his own

Daniel Kitson
Head and shoulders above the opposition: Daniel Kitson

By Bruce Dessau
16 Jun 2008

Without publicists to orchestrate hype, Daniel Kitson can sell out any venue he plays. The 2002 Perrier Award winner prefers intimate arts centres but his annual Regent's Park blow-out has become the hottest ticket in town for connoisseurs of sensitive, intelligent comedy.

Understandably. The bearded wonder is not just head and shoulders above the opposition, he is in a league of his own.

The Impotent Fury Of The Privileged is a clarion call for more compassion in the world. Inspired by recent encounters with mouthy south London teens and the distressed elderly, he wonders what has gone wrong with society, brilliantly recounting his comically shambling efforts to do his bit to make things right.

His humanitarian spirit echoes fellow traveller Josie Long's upbeat "trying is good" credo but where Long is relentlessly positive, there is a more complex side to Kitson's heartfelt thesis, making this an altogether more profound work. How can we enjoy our cheese sandwiches, he asks, while murder and abuse are happening somewhere else?

If there is a fault it is that he knows how skilful he is and can't resist referring to it, even dubbing himself "Daniel of Nazareth". Then again, his ear for the wittily turned phrase allows him to justify almost every boast. Who else would describe being mugged by kids as "prepubescent scampery"?
