Martin Martini
Worth sampling: Martin Martini has an intriguing act

By Bruce Dessau
3 Sep 2008

Is it comedy? Cabaret? Rock and roll? This Australian sextet was initially touted as a comedy band, then fell under the cabaret umbrella. Halfway through their set, manic frontman Martin Martini had a change of heart: “Every time someone says we are cabaret someone in the world dies.” He now calls his band rock and roll, but categories can go hang. His gang of Melbourne misfits is simply hilarious.

The tidiest comparison for this messy combo is probably Ben Folds-meets-a-funky-Frank Zappa. Songs such as We’re All Gonna Die and I Could Kill You suggest a particularly twisted sense of humour. Martini jerked around the stage like a cockerel on heat while his cohorts cooked up all sorts of wayward rhythms. Mr Bison on flatulent trombone would stand out in his own right even without sporting a yellow dress.

The patter between the music certainly raised more laughs than a lot of stand-up gigs. Martini has a winning way with a surreal story, repeatedly offering different deadpan descriptions of his new album, most notably that it is like grass that has been cut with a faulty lawnmower. Not funny in print, perhaps, yet it was a cumulative running gag that everyone present appreciated.

As proceedings progressed things got considerably weirder. The band wandered off and Martini donned tap shoes to give it a spot of Fred Astaire before complaining about his hernia. Eventually everyone returned for an all-guitars-blazing fallabout finale. It may not be to all tastes but this Martini is one cocktail worth sampling.
