Welsh wag Rob Brydon charms his fans

Rob Brydon
Rob Brydon: enormous fun

By Bruce Dessau
14 May 2009

Rob Brydon quickly explained that he is not the edgiest comedian. He does not attract heroin-addicted Russell Brand fans, though he did have someone who had issues with Horlicks in High Wycombe.

This self-mocking early line set the tone for an evening of unapologetically shirt-tucked-in comedy with the occasional spiky flicker.

The Welsh wag has dispensed with previous character-based material in favour of a grab-bag of gags, celebrity voices and songs.

Things started slowly, however, with a lengthy anecdote about fatherhood, complete with Ronnie Corbett impression and golfing joke.

It felt as if he was performing on a chat show rather than on stage and the lack of engagement with his audience was worrying.

Yet Brydon soon gathered momentum. Bantering with the front row, he struck gold, ribbing an RBS employee from Ebbw Vale called Johann.

Like Frankie Howerd, Brydon has a great line in insulting fans while charming them.

His gruntperfect Tom Jones homage followed some corny oneliners and merely mentioning his role in hit sitcom Gavin And Stacey yielded further roars.

Things concluded with a singalong that was perilously close to karaoke, but enormous fun. The heroin addicts do not know what they are missing.

A fix of Brydon would do them the world of good.

Until 30 May (08700 11262, www.ticketzone.co.uk).

I saw this show on the opening night on Monday 11th May. Rob was fantastic and I thought he engaged with the audience right from the start. He was relaxed, funny and his impressions were very convincing. The birth of his 4th child Tom was also extremely funny and those of us with kids can definitely confirm all that he said is actually true!!! Not too sure about his singing style, although he has had a Number 1 with "Islands in the Stream" for Comic Relief this year, so he can't be that bad. An excellent feel good show, and all the audience left happier people as a result of it. His warm up act was equally good , so forget your troubles for a couple of hours and head down to the Apollo.
