Reggie Watts is the man of many voices
Amira Hashish, Evening Standard 28 Jul 2009
If you haven't heard of Reggie Watts yet, it's about time you did some research. This one man band brings an alternative take on pop, hip hop, opera and beatbox to the turn table.
Kicking off his 12 day stint at the Soho Theatre he performed to a full house on the opening night and the crowd was captivated for the 60 minute performance.
What puts Reggie in a different league from his musical comedy contemporaries is his tremendous voice. This is a performer who could put many a pop singer to shame with his vocal range. His unique selling point, though, is an ironic take on pop culture. The combination of nonsensical lyrics with boy band type melodies results in hilarious parodies of musical genres.
He does observational comedy well too. A track about the annoyance of holding a big drink on the dance floor had me crying with laughter. Who would have thought you could make a love song with such simple subject matter at the heart of it?
From gangster rapper to English lecturer, Reggie channels different voices to introduce us to his characters. It's a fluid process and refreshingly uncomfortable to watch at times. Surely this act will fill stadiums if enough people got wind of it. For now though, get a glimpse of this comedy gem up close.

This show was dire. 90 mins of my life that I will never get back. Reggie was boring, long winded, dull, slow, unfunny, unimaginative, repetitive and too inclined to laugh at his own jokes. My advice? - find a freshly painted wall to stare at instead of seeing this.

Go and see Reggie, he is musically incredibly talented, very funny and clearly a very intelligent guy. Best live ent I have been too this year, my new personal hero.
