Win the entire Costa Book Awards 2008 shortlist
12 January 2009
There's nothing quite like putting your feet up with a great book and a delicious cup of coffee. That's why we've teamed up with Costa, the UK's fastest-growing coffee shop chain, to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a complete set of the 20 books shortlisted for the 2008 Costa Book Awards and Costa coffee cards with £25 of credit for runners-up to spend at any UK Costa outlet.
The Costa Book Awards encourage, promote and celebrate the best contemporary British writing and have the single aim of celebrating some of the most enjoyable books of the last year by writers based in the UK and Ireland.
Since their inception, the awards have recognised a wide range of books and authors across all genres - the Costa Book Awards is the only book prize to use a category system that includes First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children's Book. The variety of books shortlisted ensures that there are plenty of deliciously good reads to suit all tastes.
We've got a complete set of the 20 shortlisted books to give away, and the lucky winner will also receive a Costa coffee card with £40 credit.
Authors vying for the awards this year included Tom Rob Smith for Child 44, Diana Athill for her memoir Somewhere Towards the End, Poppy Adams for her debut novel The Behaviour of Moths and Louis de Bernières for A Partisan's Daughter.
Judges on this year's panels include author Lisa Jewell; actress and writer Pauline McLynn; journalist, writer and broadcaster Michael Buerk; poet and broadcaster Roger McGough CBE; and writer Victoria Hislop.
The 5 category winners were announced on January 6th 2009. Sadie Jones (First Novel Award), Sebastian Barry (Novel Award), Diana Athill (Biography Award), Adam Foulds (Poetry Award), and Michelle Magorian (Children's Book Award) will now go through to compete for the ultimate accolade, the prestigious Costa Book of the Year, to be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in central London on January 27th 2009.
Since the introduction of the Book of the Year award in 1985, it has been won eight times by a novel, four times by a first novel, five times by a biography, five times by a collection of poetry and once by a children's book. The two most recent winners of the Costa Book of the Year are Stef Penney for The Tenderness of Wolves (2006) and A. L. Kennedy for Day (2007).
