'"Changes" by David Bowie!' someone shouted across the office. 'Surely it would be one of Chicago's hits?' I chirped up. Such is the daily chatter of a company entirely devoted to song. At Lucky Voice we were reeling from the extraordinary US election and having some fun compiling an Obama playlist. Satirists will do a much better job than me at painting a picture of the tour Laura and George gave Barack and Michelle of their new home, but someone needs to point out to the new First Family that a private karaoke room could be a lot more effective than a basketball court or bowling alley in releasing presidential tension. The power of singing out loud is underrated and I found myself putting this theory to the test frequently this week.
Lucky Voice always passes with flying colours and never more so than when I end up in our new Islington site with seven charities that I am currently working with. Abba's famous hit 'Money, Money, Money' is when the evening really kicks off - perhaps unsurprisingly for a group who devote a great deal of their lives to encouraging individuals and institutions to part with it. Alice and Slaney, the founders of Switchback, were particularly excited at the sight of the coloured wigs and inflatable guitars in every room. These two young women mentor and train young men as they leave prison by offering them jobs in kitchens. They are intent on breaking that hideous cycle of reoffending by giving people self-confidence, financial independence and discipline through work. The Skylight Café on Commercial Street is one of the cafés in the scheme and I drop by there for lunch when I'm over that way - it certainly beats the mouldy old sandwich I might normally grab.
Pierre Condou has pulled off another coup with his redesign at the top of Centre Point. I made my first visit to the newly opened Paramount Club and was gobsmacked by the extraordinary view. It reminds me of being in Tokyo, where I have been on both work and fun trips and have always had extraordinary and memorable times. I have promised the Lucky Voice team we will go on a trip together when we hit a profit number with at least seven noughts in it.
I am quite effective at pruning my wardrobe, with both friends and Oxfam getting bags of goodies regularly. I know this frenzied recycling must mean I buy too much, but at least as a nonexecutive director of M&S I have an excuse. I am fairly obsessive about wearing their clothes. Midweek this meant a funky red dress to a meeting with Brent Hoberman, who had gathered together a selection of design authorities, including Terence Conran, Philippe Starck and Kirstie Allsopp, to talk about his website, mydeco.com. I couldn't resist the opportunity to tell one of the grandees of design that my dress came from good old you know where...
I favour sneaking to the exhibitions I really want to see between meetings so as to avoid the crowds, so I nipped to the Royal Academy to see works from the Galerie Maeght. I love the Sackler Wing; it is the right size to make you feel relaxed, happy in the knowledge that you have time to see all of the pictures before your brain becomes overloaded. The pieces I enjoyed most were the home videos made by the Maeghts of the artists they represented. You can see Matisse's quick strokes forming a portrait, Giacometti's hands constructing a drawing and Calder planning a sculpture. In this age of video explosion, where nothing seems to be left undocumented, it is a treat to look into another era and glimpse these artists at work.
It is Enterprise Week and a whole host of people come out to extol the importance of entrepreneurs to the country. Lord Mandelson does his bit on the Today programme and I am wheeled out on both Sky and the BBC. Increasingly, I think that, while the individuals who take the initial risk and start new companies are vital to our economy, the qualities that make good entrepreneurs - challenging the status quo, innovating all the time and an obsession with getting things done - are valuable to every organisation and should be applauded and encouraged.
I am ending the week on a date with my beloved boyfriend. We are going to Galvin on Baker Street, one of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is unfussy and delicious, they always treat me to a glass of champagne and the staff are not only very good at their jobs but also have a good sense of humour. We normally walk home afterwards, always singing. I am hoping that this evening we will be belting out 'Moonlight Shadow' rather than 'Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head'.
