Inside Out: Jimmy Carr

Award-winning comedian Jimmy Carr, 36, first appeared on television in 2004, as the host of the Channel 4 game shows Distraction and Your Face or Mine? Since then, he has appeared on quiz shows for Channel 4, hosted an Xfm radio show and released three DVDs. Carr lives in North London with his girlfriend, television producer Karoline Kopping.

While he doesn't eat in the evenings on tour, he has a big lunch. 'I'm a fan of Nando's. I'm loving the chicken and coleslaw, and there's a Nando's everywhere'.

He's on a diet, so not eating after 6pm, 'which is fine because I'm always working anyway'. Jimmy has several guilty food pleasures, particularly extra gravy and Yorkshire puddings with his Sunday roast. 'Yorkshire puddings are the thinking man's pancake,' he insists. He claims, 'One of the few positives of my mother's death is that I never have to eat Brussels sprouts again.'

The strangest thing he's ever eaten is an eyeball: 'I did a show with Gordon Ramsay and he had me eat tripe and an eyeball. It was kind of OK: you just have to swallow fast and not think about it.'

Though his diet seems unsavoury, he is more prudent in other areas. 'I only get drunk once or twice a year, but love it when I do. The Four Seasons in Hampshire does a cocktail called the Union Jack, which is Amaretto and Coke mixed with Guinness. Absolutely lethal.'

Who would join you for a sofa supper?
My girlfriend Karoline.

What's on the menu?
Takeaway food is the most delicious. Getting free Pepsi because you have grossly over-ordered is a proud achievement. Pizza is perfect for a sofa supper because you don't have to pay attention to it.

And to drink?
I like things such as J2O soft drinks which aren't fizzy.

What's for pudding?
Cold pizza is better than hot. Congealed cheese: delicious.

What's on the box?
The Wire: the best TV there is. We love 30 Rock as well, and pretty much all comedy.

What are your five favourite restaurants in the world?
The Wolseley in London because it does a fabulous breakfast. The Four Seasons in Hampshire for the Sunday Lunch. It's so middle class, but I love the carvery buffet thing. A fast-food restaurant called Baja Fresh in LA is wonderful. I love Mexican. Nobu, because I love sushi. Also my girlfriend's a vegetarian so sushi places are great because there's always a veggie option. Scott's in London: I love fish, and it doesn't get better than that.

Jimmy Carr's new DVD Jimmy Carr in Concert is out now (Channel 4DVD; £19.99)
