Inside Out: Terry Pratchett

Terry will be spending Christmas at home with his wife, his 32-year-old daughter Rhianna and his mother Eileen. 'Unfortunately there are no kids around to liven things up. I think Christmas is made for children and children really make Christmas,' he says. His most memorable Christmas was 'a few months after Lyn and I were married, nearly 40 years ago. We had shepherd's pie, roast beef and champagne. We had saved one of the tiers of our wedding cake to use as the Christmas cake. There was a power cut but it didn't matter, and it actually snowed. It was as if it had been scripted by the English Tourist Board.'

Who would join you for a sofa supper?
My wife Lyn and at least one of our cats.

What's on the menu?
Potato omelette with homegrown chillies.

What's for pudding?
I am not a big fan of pudding.

And to drink?
Organic Honey Dew beer.

What's on the television?
The old Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett.

What are your favourite restaurants around the world?
My absolute favourite place is The Castleman Hotel in Chettle, Dorset. I have been going there for over ten years. They serve the best homemade honeycomb ice cream. If I am in London, I like The Ivy. People tell me it's not that fashionable any more, but I have never had a bad meal there. I don't recall the name of it, but there was a tiny Japanese restaurant in the backstreets of Melbourne where I tried an oyster shooter: an oyster marinated in a shot glass with wasabi, Mirin rice wine, soy and a pinch of sugar. You knock it back in one go and it nearly takes your head off.

Jack's Fish Spot in Seattle does a superb clam chowder - I could eat five bowls of the stuff. I have to pace myself. Geales in W8 is a favourite. I always have the fish soup; it is the best I have ever tasted.
