Yasser at the Arcola Theatre, E8

Following a hit run at the Assembly Rooms in 2008's Edinburgh Fringe and an acclaimed season in Chicago, award-winning Dutch play Yasser receives its London premiere at Arcola Theatre in a production by Anglo-Dutch company Double Agent.

Shakespeare meets the Middle East in a poignant and playful monologue, as a Palestinian actor playing Shylock in Britain discovers that no one can cut a pound of flesh without spilling blood.
Yasser Mansour is a young, idealistic Palestinian actor, living and working in Europe. In his dressing room, he prepares to go on stage and play Shakespeare's archetypal Jew, Shylock. But he has just been robbed of his suitcase, which contained all the props and costume needed for his role.

Moving between today's political reality and Shakespeare's tale of prejudice and emancipation, Yasser ultimately discovers that the Arab understands Shylock better than anyone else.

Yasser is written by Abdelkader Benali, one of the Netherlands' most acclaimed contemporary writers of fiction, poetry, drama and journalism, admired for his lucid and insightful portrayals of the immigrant experience.
