Londoners head north for Hogmanay

29 Dec 2006

Tens of thousands of travellers are packing northbound trains today to enjoy an authentic Hogmanay.

Both east and west coast mainline operators to the north and Scotland said services were "very busy" as Londoners headed for celebrations in Edinburgh.

They said there were still some seats available but passengers were advised to check before travelling.

A spokesman for GNER said: "All our services are heavily booked, with Edinburgh the most popular venue for the Hogmanay celebrations. We are laying on extra trains on New Year's Day to bring people back."

Services from London to the west of England were also very busy. A spokesman for First Great Western said trains from Paddington were heavily booked. "Our peak was just before Christmas but we also have a very large number of people travelling today," he said.
