It's St George's Day on Monday 23 April and London is getting into the patriotic spirit with a series of events that celebrate England's patron saint...

Classic English film and television comedy in Trafalgar Square

A programme featuring the best of English humour, selected by the British Film Institute, will be showing on screen in Trafalgar Square from 12.30pm on Monday 23 April.

It will include television comedy clips, Futtock's End starring Ronnie Barker (from 1-2pm), and silent films from the BFI National Archive.

The team from Monty Python's Spamalot will then lead a world record attempt for the number of people playing in a coconut orchestra.
Registration for the record attempt runs from 5-6.30pm, with the record breaking effort taking place at 7pm.

Organisers are hoping to beat the mark set by 1785 people who clopped along to a rendition of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life outside a New York theatre in March last year. Coconuts will be provided.

The evening will be rounded off with a screening of classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail(15 rating) from 7.30-9pm.

Shakespeare's Globe

There will be double cause for celebration at the Globe theatre with both Shakespeare's birthday and England's patron saint being commemorated.

The festivities will begin with a Venetian-style masked procession from Southwark Cathedral to the globe on Sunday 22 April. Anyone wanting to take part should meet at the Cathedral's Millennium Courtyard at 10.30am, with prizes going to the best masks.

The globe itself opens its doors from 11am-4pm with music, dance, workshops run by professional actors, the chance to stand onstage at the globe, Italian food and wine, and family games all taking place.

On Monday 23 April the theatre's white walls will transform into silver screens as the BFI brings film to the globe. A series of silent film adaptations of Shakespeare's work will be projected onto the globe from 8-10pm, with live accompaniment by award winning composer Laura Rossi and the Fourth Dimension String Quartet.

What lovely events going on - I wish I had the day off!

- Sarah, Fleet, Hants

This is good stuff, it's about time we celebrated the patron saint of England alongside all the patron saints of other countries we seem to prefer to celebrate in London.
