Speeding planes will be seen racing through the sky when the Red Bull Air Race World Series comes to London.

Competing against the clock, the daredevil pilots have to weave their way through a series of tight turns marked out by specially designed pylons above the River Thames. They race in knockout rounds, with the two fastest pilots going head-to-head in the final.

Flying low to the ground at speeds of up to 250 mph and withstanding forces reaching 10G, their skill, nerve and physical fitness are all tested.

Held in a relatively confined space, the event makes an exhilarating spectacle for the crowds.

Grandstands and special standing areas will be erected around the O2 Arena and on Peruvian Wharf in Greenwich for spectators at the London race, the sixth of the 10 round world series.

With Britain's Paul Bonhomme currently leading the championship by a single point following his second place finish at the last round in Istanbul, there should be plenty of interest for the home fans.

The contest is expected to draw more than 30,000 spectators over the weekend.
