Thousands of Londoners are invited to attend a free party in Trafalgar Square next month - and the dress code calls for a pair of three dimensional glasses.

This image of a dancing girl will be projected over the square as up to 9,000 people equipped with colour-filtered glasses will watch performances by the Chemical Brothers and singer Calvin Harris, accompanied by animation and 3D images projected from a multimedia stage.

The 3D disco, London's first, is part of a four-day audio-visual event.

Beck's Fusions starts on Thursday 6 September, with the opening of a temporary gallery "pod" to accommodate 10 digital art and music displays.

The circular structure will be free to the public, and will be exhibiting work from leading contemporary artists commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Art.

The artworks range from sculpture to animation and video, and each piece has been inspired by a track of music, which visitors can listen to while viewingthe exhibits. Participating artists include Turner shortlisters Jane and Louise Wilson and London-based Douglas Fishbone, whose previous work includes a mound of 30,000 bananas in Trafalgar Square.

The pod gallery will be open between noon and 10pm on 6 and 7 September and between 10am and 8pm on Saturday 8 September. It will then be transformed into a stage ready for the 3D disco on the Sunday, which starts at 6.30pm.

The Chemical Brothers will be accompanied by lights and visual displays produced by the United Visual Artists and Flat Nose George. Support acts DJ Erol Alkan and Calvin Harris will be joined by the 3D image of the dancing girl, by Novak 3D Disco.

Nicola Gates, senior brand manager for Beck's, said: "Beck's Fusions will be bringing something truly unique to the UK art and music scene this year.

"For the past 20 years, Beck's has championed emerging visual arts talent through projects such as Beck's Futures, and in this multimedia age we're beginning to see artists experiment with other genres. We're celebrating this by bringing together big names from both the art and music worlds in a series of pioneering events, launching in London's iconic Trafalgar Square."
