Scrumptious: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, on the London Children's Film Festival programme

A family sing-a-long to Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang and films from Germany and Iran are highlights of the London Children's Film Festival programme announced today.

The festival is the only one in the country dedicated to children's films and is intended to expand the range of work on offer.

Robert Rider, head of cinema at the Barbican, one of the host venues, said no foreign language movies for children received a wide release in Britain last year.

Of the 505 films released altogether, only 18 were for children. Fifteen were American and the others, Flushed Away, The Thief Lord and The Little Polar Bear 2, were partly funded by the US.

"Youngsters in this country are being starved of the riches of children's cinema from around the world," Mr Rider said.

The festival will take place from 17-25 November at 11 venues, including cinemas in Wood Green, Greenwich and Wandsworth.

The German films will include girl-power movie Wild Chicks In Love. There will also be previews of blockbusters such as Enchanted.
