Treat yourself to a bit of bubbly

13 Nov 2007

A bottle of champagne makes the perfect gift - for someone else or even for yourself.

Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV Champagne, £31.99
Available from Waitrose, Fortnum & Mason, Majestic and Selfridges. A favourite with wine connoisseurs, this full-bodied champagne, with hints of biscuit and brioche, is deliciously creamy.

Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Vintage Champagne 2000, £22.99
www.sainsburys.co.uk, or 0800 636262.
In 2006, it topped a blind-tasting of champagnes carried out by Which?. With masses of mouth-watering citrus fruits and notes of vanilla and brioche, this is clean and delicate on the palate.

Tesco Premier Cru Brut Champagne, £14.97
www.tesco.com, or 0800 505555.
This was the fizz that won the 2005 International Wine Challenge. Full of honey and biscuity flavours, it is extremely drinkable champagne.

Waitrose Blanc de Blancs NV Champagne, £18.99
www.waitrosewine.com, or 0800 188881.
Made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, this is a crisp and zesty champagne.

Ayala Rosé Majeur Champagne NV, £21.99
Marks & Spencer www.marks andspencer.com, or 0845 302 1234.
With aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries, this pink champagne has an elegant finish.

Marquès de Monistrol, Cava Reservado Rosé, £6.79
www.waitrosewine.com, or 0800 188881.
Although not technically a champagne, this lively Spanish strawberry-scented rosé cava can compete with the real thing. It is bursting with crisp and fruity flavours and is light and refreshing.
