The London Art Fair begins its third decade as Britain's biggest showcase of modern and contemporary art this week.

More than 100 galleries are setting up stalls at the Islington Business Design Centre from tomorrow until Sunday.

There is also a curated photography exhibition and a series of free talks.

Jonathan Burton, the fair's director, said the number of fairs had rocketed in recent years, notably with the arrival of Frieze in October.

But the London Art Fair was an opportunity for participating galleries to meet their clients - established or prospective - early in the year.

Mr Burton said: "People who are experienced collectors with an ongoing relationship with a gallery take the opportunity to see a wider range of work under one roof and novice collectors can come in and maybe spend £150."

Among the works on offer are the mural Robyn Denny created for the Austin Reed shop in Carnaby Street in front of which the Beatles were famously pictured.

A giant sculpture of a head has been created by Emily Young, who is said to have been the inspiration for Pink Floyd's song See Emily Play.

The Art Fund charity is hosting a debate on Saturday on the value - financial and philosophical - of art.

An auction of work donated by artists including Tracey Emin, Paula Rego and Mario Testino is being held tonight in aid of the Terrence Higgins Trust.

• Tonight's preview and auction is from 6pm until 9pm, tickets cost £20.

The fair opens from 11am until 9pm tomorrow and Thursday; 11am until 7pm Friday and Saturday; 11am until 7pm Sunday. Tickets cost £14 on the door or £10 in advance.
