Morrissey has been named as a headline act at the 02 Wireless Festival.

The singer, 48, who spent much of the last decade living in the US, will perform at London's Hyde Park on Independence Day, July 4.

Announcing the concert, he said: "It is, of course, the day when America celebrated its independence from Sidcup, but we can easily reverse that situation with a bit of John Mills stiff-upperness."

He added: "I am honoured to be asked to headline on July 4, marking my 26th year haunting British music, and following the Hyde Park greats - T Rex, Joan Armatrading, and someone with insecure teeth."

He promised "a thundering bill of tight nerves and suavity", adding: "I will take Hyde Park like a flea inhabits a dog."

He said: "Art-hounds and people with badly cut hair are very welcome. I shall do my utmost not to pull a sour face. The sun will make up its own mind."

The former Smiths star is expected to play tracks from his forthcoming studio album as well as previous hit singles at his only UK festival date.

Morrissey was recently embroiled in a row with NME for an article in which he allegedly told a reporter that Britain had lost its identity and that you could not hear a "British accent" in Knightsbridge.

He insisted he was not a racist and said he was suing the magazine.

Fatboy Slim, US artist Beck, Counting Crows and rock band The National will also perform at the event, which runs from July 3 to 6.

The first night's headline act is yet to be announced.
