Big Ballet
Sugar plump fairies: The Big Ballet will perform at the Orchard Theatre

Big welcome for the 16-stone ballet dancers

Evening Standard   31 Mar 2008

They are more sugar plump than sugar plum fairies but promise to be every bit as graceful as their thinner dancing peers.

The Big Ballet, an ensemble of 16 Russian dancers each weighing no less than 16 stone, will perform at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, on 28 April as part of a British tour.

The troupe was formed in 1994 by choreographer Evgenii Panfilov to challenge social stereotypes about size and beauty.

Earlier this year, principal female Tatyana Gladkih was suspended for dropping below the minimum weight requirement.
