Established back in 1976 in the hub of London's East End, the Spitalfields Festival now incorporates a three-week spell in June and another 10 days in December to keep the momentum ticking.

It offers an eclectic mix, including classical, Chinese and jazz music, and the attractive venues vary from Christ Church and Shoreditch Church to Wilton's Music Hall.

An event called In the House launches the programme tonight, comprising five tiny performances by Royal Academy of Music students in five drawing rooms on Fournier Street.

Later highlights include The Voice, a weekend dedicated to singing that includes a workshop on Gibbons's The Cryes of London (Saturday 14), and a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, followed by the Silk String Quartet concert in Wilton's Music Hall (Friday 6).
