SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND
GREENWICH & DOCKLANDS FESTIVAL
Fittingly, water is the theme of this festival, now in its 13th year, and it has an all-embracing roster of dance, music, fireworks and site‑specific theatre taking place on both sides of the Thames. In addition, local restaurants are offering special menus over the weekend.
Highlights include a nightly son et lumière performance of Handel's Water Music (first performed on a London barge, by the way) to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Handel's death, at the National Maritime Museum; Fous de Bassin (Waterfools) an extraordinary theatrical waterscape with fire and pyrotechnics created by French troupe Ilotopie at Millwall Outer Dock tonight at 10pm; and Pi‑Leau, a piece of promenade street theatre in Woolwich town centre and at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich tomorrow evening, where, you are warned, you may get wet.
There are also pop-up events at Greenwich landmarks including the Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory.
Until Sunday. Information: 020 8305 1818, www.festival.org. Free.

Home to what may be London's most civilised elevenses — seed cake and a glass of Madeira. It's a stylish but utilitarian room with small, tightly packed tables and chairs, dominated by an open-plan bakery and kitchen. Simple. Delicious. Very good value.

With a single dessert and just two glasses of wine our bill was kept in check - but the effort of doing so was not much fun
