Live Ashes action for free in Regents Park

12 Aug 2009

If you can't make it to the Brit Oval to watch the final Fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia don't despair. You can always head to Regents Park (22nd and 23rd August) for the npower Cricket in the Park event, where every wicket, run, throw, catch and nail-biting moment will be beamed live on a giant screen – all for free.

This is a great day out for all the family with lots going on. For wannabe Freddie Flintoffs, the Sky Coaching Zone will provide tips on how play better.

There's the Buxton Kids Zone for children, with fancy dress competitions, face painting, games – all conveniently placed so that parents can keep an eye on their little ones without missing a minute of the exciting cricketing action.

Laid on by ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and Ashes sponsors npower, Cricket in the Park is a series of events across the country celebrating one of the most spectacular cricketing seasons in sports history.

Unfortunately an inflexible gate policy, over zealous security, and a poor understanding of crowd control marred what should have been a great occassion and a great event from the ecb. many people queued for 40 mins or more only to be turned away whilst inside was, according to the lucky few that made it through the gate, markedly empty of crowds. i was amongst a group of 20 people politely asking to be let in, as many more people were leaving the enclosure, only to have the police called. about 20 police arrived and agreed that there was no crowd problem but refused to intervene saying it was between us and the organisers. they even commented that as a free event if it had limited numbers then they should know what the numbers were (the organizers clearly had no idea how many people were inside). a direct quote from a policemen "we don't want to be here either just because security can't do their job". from a personal point of view i find it particularly galling that a free event held in a public park was so poorly managed.

Very good set up. If you go today be sure not to take bottles or knives. it's gated and you won't get in!

I was in Cambridge when they were showing the Edgbaston test there. The sound and picture were very good. I recommend it.
