Who Cares What I Think, by Bob and Roberta Smith

Bidding fever: Who Cares What I Think, by Bob and Roberta Smith, has a starting price of £2,000

PREVIEW
Beatbullying Art Auction
Drapers' Hall, EC2

Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Creed and Turner Prize-winner Mark Wallinger are among the artists whose work goes under the hammer next week in aid of the BeatBullying charity.

Founded in 1999, the organisation operates in more than 400 boroughs and has won awards for its work with schools in combating bullying and has recently pioneered “cyber mentoring” to tackle online bullying.

For this worthy cause, 74 artists have donated work, with bidding beginning at not unaffordable rates. Keith Coventry, recently the subject of a highly praised show at Haunch of Venison gallery, has provided a silk screen print called Crack Girls estimated at £250; an attractive, geometric oil painting, wittily entitled Abstract Shapes Against Bullying, by Emma Biggs and Matthew Collings, is as dear as it gets at £3,500.

Bids should be submitted online prior to the auction — see the website for full details — before celebrity auctioneer Jeffrey Archer wields
the hammer at the Drapers' Hall on 15 September.

ON THE WATER
Canal Music
7.30pm, London Canal Museum, 12-13 New Wharf Road, N1 (020 7713 0836; www.canalmuseum.org.uk) £10

The often overlooked beauty of London's Victorian canal system is celebrated in an intriguing collaboration between folk singer Lisa Knapp and experimental musician Leafcutter John. Their composition, drawing on the history of the canal, is premiered just outside the Canal Museum in King's Cross tonight, on board a narrowboat called The Chiswick, which will then sail on to Birmingham over the next month, stopping for concerts on the way.

MEET ME AT...
The Botanist
7 Sloane Square, SW1 (020 7730 0077, www.thebotanistsloanesquare.com). Open noon–10.30pm. £25pp ex-drinks

This place is part of a stable of gastropubs but is more of a brasserie. The main menu features starters such as pan-fried scallops, curried apple and potato purée, golden raisin and caper beurre noisette. Mains include the seriously complicated “Botanist seasonal salad” and simpler dishes such as roast hake. The Botanist is a busy place— but thankfully the service is slick enough to keep pace.
