            Sweet Charity

Hey, big spender: Shirley Maclaine in the 1969 film of Sweet Charity, in a role to be played by Tamzin Outhwaite in the Menier’s revival

PREVIEW
SWEET CHARITY
Menier Chocolate Factory, SE1

Made famous by the 1969 film version starring Shirley Maclaine, Federico Fellini's 1957 film Nights of Cabiria, this musical comedy debuted on Broadway in 1996, where it was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and ran for more than 600 performances. Neil Simon wrote the book, Cy Coleman the music and Dorothy Fields the lyrics, for several memorable numbers including Hey, Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now and The Rhythm of Life. Charity Hope Valentine is a dance-hall hostess at the Fandango Ballroom and she longs to settle down but she's unlucky in love; all the men in her life love her and leave her, after stealing her money or cheating on her. In the first London production for more than 10 years Tamzin Outhwaite plays the gullible heroine, Matthew White directs and choreography is by Stephen Mear.

Knaypa (Polish for pub) has a foot in both camps. On the one hand there are the old-fashioned, solid, hearty, filling dishes that are traditional in Polish restaurants, while on the other it has tried for a more modern, less institutional atmosphere. Try the pickled herrings or an smoked sheep's milk cheese. The food is wholesome, with more attention paid to presentation than in many Polish restaurants. The range of beers is magnificent.
