A mini skirt that is super flattering

Unless you are tall, leggy and about 17 years old, mini skirts are a tricky trend to pull off — especially in summer when you have to ditch flattering opaque tights and go bare-legged.

However, this season those risqué minis have become a fraction easier to wear thanks to a new silhouette — the flattering prom style.

Much like the shape of a traditional prom dress, these A-line mini prom skirts are short and flirty, but the lack of tight, tarty Lycra keeps the look sophisticated, even when your pins are on full show.

Also in their favour, these short puffy skirts aren't light on fabric, so won't cling to your thighs and bottom like the unforgiving bodycon versions do, and will offer a little more style than a cut-off denim mini as they come in lots of different pretty prints.

Admittedly, this is still a look that trendy teens will love but, pins permitting, fashionistas in their twenties and thirties should also take the plunge.

We suggest pairing your mini prom skirt with simple tees and vests to keep the skirt as your statement piece.

There are so many mini prom skirts on the high street in on-trend florals, paint splashes, checks, spots and graphic prints that there is no need for adding extra fuss.

Our Street Style girls wore gladiators or pumps with their minis, so avoid high heels and keep it chic.

If you choose retro prints, this look can have a real Fifties edge to it, go for rosebuds like the cute style at asos.com (£27.50).

Slightly more grown up is Ted Baker's silk check print (£85). It's not as short as some styles so could pass for the office if the rest of your look is demure.

Plainer styles can be found at New Look — we love the block colour blue, pink or red style with flower buttons (£18).

But if you are after something a bit different check out Firetrap's paint splatter print in blue and white (£50), or Topshop's nude mesh style with black spots (£35).

Just one word of warning — beware of sudden gusts of wind as these skirts blow up like a balloon in a breeze.

Just follow the golden rule of mini-skirt wearing and be prepared with a decent pair of knickers.

I disagree with Dectora strongly as I have a sizable wardrobe of skirts like some of these I think they look fabulous particularly models no.2,6,1 & 3 in that order, 4 & 5 less so, as I have descent pins I don't like to have them covered up in trousers(I'm very much a skirts girl in her late 20s). Yes the breeze can be a pain at times, suggest a fullish(to make the most of the skirts' fullness)underskirt/petticoat can be a saviour in windy conditions, these are not always that easy to get, but can be bought via the web.

Even on very pretty young models those skirts look terrible, more like a mistake at a dress-making class than anything else.

Shame- I'm a 'fashionista' - but in her 50s- with very good pins- but a bit too much dignity to show them in a mini, espec as I wore minis first (& second time) round..
