Holiday shorts for men

Jamie Hince's legs — who knew? One does make assumptions about men in bands who always wear skinny jeans: namely, that the legs underneath are white and puny. Not so in Hince's case.

Somehow, somewhere, he managed to acquire a tan before jetting off to St Tropez, as well as cramming in a few gym sessions between his vocal duties for The Kills. Which is why, against all the odds, we don't entirely disapprove of his donning of a pair of cut-offs on holiday.

Let's face it, it can't be easy being Boyfriend of Kate at the best of times, never mind when it comes to assembling a credible holiday wardrobe.

Even so, the cut of said shorts — skimming mid-thigh — is rather bold, although when compared to his girlfriend's arse-skimming ones, they seem quite staid.

Over in Portofino, a less confident Domenico Dolce opted for a more modest pair that fell to the knee. Perhaps this is the summer uniform of choice for the off-duty fashion designer, since Yves Saint Laurent's Stefano Pilati chose a white pair that were practically identical.

For the male, as for the female, holiday shorts are fraught with pitfalls. Do you go down the novelty nautical route, embracing whales and starfish prints? Or do you plump for the more traditional, albeit hot and sweaty, pocketed cargo short?

When you think about it, denim shorts aren't nearly as bad as some of the other options available. Look at Sting. Purple shorts with waves up the sides? Nice parasol, mind.
