Dreamgirls say sorry to Motown

Evening Standard   23 Feb 2007

The maker of Dreamgirls, the Oscar-nominated musical, have said sorry for offending the Motown record label.

DreamWorks film studio took out full-page adverts in trade journals saying its film was 'a work of fiction' and apologised for any confusion.

The movie, starring Eddie Murphy, is widely seen as a loose version of the story of Motown act The Supremes.

Motown singer Smokey Robinson complained that a character in the film launched his record label with money from mobsters.

Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr said he was satisfied with the apology. 'I wish them all the best in the Academy Awards,' he added.
