Russell Crowe has signed up to star in the remake of critically acclaimed British thriller State of Play.

The actor replaces Brad Pitt, who quit because of concerns over the script.

Crowe plays Cal McCaffrey, a journalist whose investigation into a political researcher's death leads him to a conspiracy, film bible Variety reported.

The remake of the BBC mini-series, which was written by Paul Abbott, is being directed by Kevin Macdonald.

It also stars Edward Norton, Dame Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn.

The movie, set in the US instead of the original London setting, is being made by British-based production company Working Title.

The original State of Play, in which John Simm played McCaffrey, won widespread praise from critics.

Well I prefer Russell to Brad for this part but I still think the producers should have got John Simm to do it.

He is Cal. No-one else will measure up.
