Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson will make TWO movies out of JRR Tolkien's book The Hobbit, it was confirmed today.

The movies will be shot in one go but released separately.

The deal between New Zealander Jackson and film company New Line had been held up because of a row over the royalties from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, which has raked in more than £1.5bn globally.

But in a statement yesterday, Jackson, New Line and MGM studios said the dispute was solved.

Jackson and movie writer Fran Walsh will be executive directors of the new films. It is not known who will direct them.

Jackson said: "I'm pleased we've put our differences behind us. We're delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

Filming is due to begin in 2009, with release dates in 2010 and 2011.
