War-time drama Atonement led a night of British triumphs at the Golden Globes - without a ceremony to celebrate.

The adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy took best film prize and best original score. Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for his intense performance as an oil prospector in There Will Be Blood and Julie Christie won best actress as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Away From Her.

Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd, the story of the demon barber filmed at Pinewood, took two awards including best actor in a musical for Johnny Depp.

But with actors supporting striking screenwriters, the ceremony was reduced to a modest 30-minute press conference at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Caterers, jewellers and fashion designers were estimated to have lost about £50 million.

The British winners are still frontrunners for next month's Oscars, which may also be hit by the strike.

The Atonement team - who received more Globe nominations than any previous British film with seven - celebrated their victories swimming and re-enacting scenes from the film at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood.

Tim Bevan, of Working Title, the producers, said Atonement's triumph would give it a big boost at the US box office. "A win is a win," he said. Asked whether he was disappointed for the stars, he said: "The thing about a best picture win is it's all-encompassing. It was a group effort led by a brilliant new director [Joe Wright]. It was actually quite nice to win without having to sit through the ceremony."

Julie Christie, 66, was first nominated for a Globe 42 years ago but this was her first win. It was also Day-Lewis's first Golden Globe after four previous nominations. Both stars are now hotly tipped to win their second Oscars.

In the TV awards, Samantha Morton and Jim Broadbent won for their performances in the Channel 4 film about Myra Hindley. The BBC's Extras won best comedy but David Duchovny in Californication beat Ricky Gervais as best comedy actor.

Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which organises the Globes, said: "We all hope the strike will be over soon so everyone can go back to making good movies and TV programmes which is what the Globes were designed to celebrate."
