THE HAT AND CANE
Inevitably the centrepiece of the London Film Museum's exhibition. Although these props were necessarily replaced from time to time in the 22 years that Chaplin's alter ego, the Little Tramp, remained on screen in films that he made between 1914 and 1936, no other known examples have the authenticity of these, still bearing the shipping labels from the Chaplin Studios.

CHAPLIN v THE FBI
A selection of documents from vast FBI files reveals the Bureau's deep and vengeful suspicion of Chaplin throughout most of his Hollywood career: his representation of the poor and underprivileged was viewed as "subversive" by the American political Right.

THE GIANT CHICKEN
In The Gold Rush, Chaplin memorably transforms himself into a big bird. The original costume meticulously recreated for Richard Attenborough's 1992 film, Chaplin - and worn by Robert Downey Jnr - is on display

CHAPLIN'S FILMS
Of his 80 films (in which he starred and, from early on, directed himself), extracts from the great Hollywood features (The Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times and Limelight among them) are on show in a miniature viewing theatre designed in tribute to Hollywood's legendary Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS
The story of London rags to Hollywood riches is told through more than 200 photographs, some never seen in public before, along with archival film material.

Charlie Chaplin - The Great Londoner at the London Film Museum, County Hall, SE1 (020 7202 7040, www.londonfilmmusuem.com). Museum entry ticket (£8-£12, free for under-fives) includes admission to the exhibition. Open 10am-5pm Mon to Fri; 10am-6pm Sat-Sun
