Triple Chaplin treat

By Derek Malcolm, Evening Standard  16.08.07

Charlie Chaplin

Short but sweet: Charlie Chaplin

Look here too

Time was when Chaplin shorts were so popular that film-goers often preferred them to the main movie. He shared that distinction, by the way, with Mickey Mouse. That was a long time ago, during and immediately after the First World War. Now things are different. Buster Keaton is more fashionable than the Little Tramp and, besides, there are no shorts on movie programmes these days.

It doesn't seem likely that Carl Davis, conducting a chamber section of the Royal Philharmonic accompanying all 12 of Chaplin's Mutual shorts from 1916-17 over the next few nights, will alter the situation. But at least he will give good entertainment to several thousand people at the Cadogan Hall who would otherwise have to get the Mutuals on DVD.

Last night's large audience was treated to three shorts showing how good Charlie was when finally given his head for the first time by the Mutual Film Company.

Easy Street contains the immortal moment when Charlie, newly recruited as a policeman, beats a huge bully by locking his head in a gas streetlight.

One A.M. is his magnificent solo effort as a drunk, trying vainly to mount the stairs leading to his bedroom.

The Immigrant is more substantial, showing Chaplin's social conscience as the little English tramp wins a card game on his way to America but puts the money into the bag of a poverty-stricken young girl and her sick mother.

Davis scores each film with the same fluency and charm that used to be a constant from the best lone pianists as improvisations. He will repeat the trick, with three more films each night, till Saturday. This labour of love should be much appreciated, especially for its rarity value.
