Double take on two working girls

By Derek Malcolm
27 Dec 2007

The protagonists of Fernando Leon de Aranoa's film, which won three Spanish Goyas, are Caye (Candela Pena) and Zulema (Micaela Nevarez), two young prostitutes in Madrid. Caye is trying to hide her profession from her conservative family, Zulema is selling herself to support her young son back home in the Dominican Republic.

Fine acting from Pena, Nevarez and the whole cast distinguishes a genuine attempt to show sympathy and understanding for the fate of these women. But there is also a slightly slit-eyed sense that the film is trying to have it both ways: it is attempting to be honest but also to give its watchers a bit of a sexy time.
