National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Mindless plot: Cage, Mirren and Kruger

By Derek Malcolm

If you can believe Helen Mirren as Nicolas Cage's mother, you might even believe the plot of this silly action movie.

It's a sequel to the almost equally mindless but surprisingly successful National Treasure, and it has treasure hunter Ben Gates (Cage) trying to prove that his great-great grandfather had nothing to do with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

To do this, he must first find the Lost City of Gold, the clues to which lie under the President's desk in the Oval Office and the Queen's workstation at Buckingham Palace.

His parents (Jon Voight and Mirren) come along for the ride, as does his sidekick (Justin Bartha) and his former girl (Diane Kruger). The villain of the piece is Ed Harris, and now and then Harvey Keitel appears.

The piece's chief fault is in using good actors to entirely dim effect and making a daft story worse by virtually copying the original movie in different locations.

Jon Turteltaub is the director and he should be given a good slap.

What really makes me cringe is a quality actor trying to act in a substandard film...however, in a substandard film like this, containing several quality actors, you run a risk of suffering "multiple cringisms".

Sorry this film is merely good family entertainment and is actually popular with everyone (it was No.1 in American box office for three weeks). It makes history cool for kids. There is fascinating historical fact in its entertaining content.
