CSNY/Deja Vu

Cert: 15

Description: Cinematic diary of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concerts of 2006 which caused so much controversy. Dubbed the Freedom Of Speech tour, the band aims to prick the consciences of ordinary American by criticizing the Bush administration for its role in the war in Iraq, even encouraging an audience sing-along to the lyric "Let's impeach the president for lying". Some sections of the audience boo or walk out in disgust. Behind the scenes footage, interviews and contributions from veteran war reporter Mike Cerre punctuate the concert sequences.

CSNY
Rocking out: Neil Young gets political

By Derek Malcolm
17 Jul 2008

Bernard Shakey, the named director of this music film, is actually Neil Young, who has constructed a chronicle of his old band's Freedom of Speech tour of 2006 which has gathered the ire of America's right with its left-leaning digressions on the iraq war. They include the testimony of veterans and war correspondents and a song which begins: "let's impeach the President for lying."

The song caused a riot in conservative Atlanta. But elsewhere the film does not treat itself too seriously. CSNY, of course, means Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and many will go simply for the music and images of the tour. They will find plenty of that but also a documentary, loosely based on Young's living With War CD, that may seem eccentrically droll but sincerely attempted to make some sort of political difference.
