Storm clouds hang over Nights in Rodanthe

In George Wolfe’s film, an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel — which has to be better than this — Richard Gere is a surgeon who falls for Diane Lane’s unhappily married woman.
She has left her family and gone to babysit for a friend in a North Carolina coastal town. They seek refuge together when a nasty hurricane hits and spout an equally horrendous set of clichés before it passes.
Trembling lips and glistening tears are the order of the day. Even the music seems to sob — but this is unlikely to be replicated by those watching.
Sympathetic actors Gere and Lane may be, but here they are cast adrift in a farrago that seems to be made of treacle.

This was a superb film. Very touching, poignant and involving. The characters were real and you cared for them. The film is also beautiful to look at and is well served by tremendous performances. Diane Lane in particular is superb in the lead role. Recommended!
