Pyschic Powers in Ring

Japan’s most successful horror, taken from a best-selling book by director Hideo Nakata, has already spawned a prequel, a sequel and a spin-off. None of them, however, matches it for atmospherics as TV reporter Reiko (Nanako Matsushima) attempts to solve the riddle of the ghostly video which, when watched, causes death within a week.

The measured, eerie direction keeps the tension tight throughout. David Cronenberg could perhaps compete with Nakata but unfortunately only lesser mortals have attempted to replicate the feeling that Reiko has plunged into something with which even her psychic powers can’t compete.
